Diary, 1814-1815.

Diary of Ennis Duncan, Jr., an orderly sergeant and provost marshal in the 16th Regiment, Kentucky Militia Detached, describing the itinerary of the unit into Canada and thereafter, during the War of 1812. Also included are descriptions of problems among the officers, ill-trained and ill-disciplined troops, camp life, sickness and deaths, desertion, the French and the Indians, gambling, stealing, opium and whiskey.

Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety.
